You are wrong to think that his sharp thinking didn't touch on this issue. The real challenge is
to explain to yourself exactly why you think this
question makes any sense. If for example you were
sufering from amnesia you could sensibly utter the
words 'Who am I ?'. If you were acting in a play
you could say to the director 'Who am I' i.e. what
role am I playing ? Wittgentein didn't think there
were any philosophical questions so he wasn't trying to give answers to them. Suppose I ask you
what day of the week it is and you tell me its
Friday. I then say 'no, what I mean is 'What day of the week is it really ? I don't just want to know what it is called.' Perhaps we could imagine
I want to know what day of the week it is in the
mind of God.
