do not fret... the minister's veil is a simple story with very evident themes. the veil is a symbol of hidden sin... "lo! on every visage a black veil" exclaims hooper, meaning everyone carries concealed sin. the veil is simply a physical manifestation of sin... hooper then is bereuid with to signify that we can never be free of sin we carry it until the grave. also consider peoples reaction to it... the village is apalled, the children are afrai , women run out of his sermon, all because the veil holds great power in that it reminds the mes of their sin and so it brings shame and loneliness to their heart. also think of hooper and his state he is a "melancholy man" and charecterized by gloom even before the veil. finally consider elizabeth and the sad smile they both also have strong symbolic meanings but i simply dont have time to explain all of the concepts. remember the story is a parable evrything has more than one meaning in this story.
