austen, the answers are probably too late to help you in cl, but here goes anyway! Historical info about the period of publication: 1850; pre-Civil War New England (M.); a time of reform movements such as abolition, women's rights, education, and much more; Hawthorne was an antitranscendentalist, believed in the dark side of man, etc. (any standard high school text can give you more info.)
genre? (not sure i understand the question--it's a novel!) american romanticism: belief in the power and value of the individual; settings usually faraway, exotic in some way; "psychological" stories; so much more! perhaps you can look up romanticism.
my apologies if you aren't a high school student! 'bye now!
