I am also new to Goethe. I did just read The Sorrows of Young Werther and it was incredible. I read it because there was a referenc to it in Mary Shelley's Frankenstien. It was one of the three books that the creature had found and read. The others were Paradice Lost and Plutarchs Lives. Someone or other in the margine notes of the book quoted that these three were a virtual romantic encyclopedia. The book I read was tremendous. I can't quite put into words how it affected me but I really enjoyed it. Werther is very idealistic as am I. I would recommend it highly. I have not read Faust but plan to sometime.
