You ysis is correct! What do Hugo, Dostoevsky, Neitzsche, Kafka, and Nabokov have in common? Well, maybe nothing, but the story line started in LES MISERABLES sure goes a long way.
Many of the traits of THE DOUBLE were picked up from the characters of LES MISERABLES, and the works of Neitzsche then extended to THE TRIAL by Kafka.
Adding to Nabokov: I made a recent discovery that Nabokov encoded Morse Code within the text of his novels. For example, why is the mystery character in called CQ? Nabokov knew all about the symbolism (excuse me for saying this, but it is in fact symbolism no matter how much Nabokov despised it) of Morse Code during WWII. The Americanans and English used beat the defining tempo of Beethovan's 5th Symphony over and over again as propaganda against the German forces. ...- is V for Victory. Nabokov tried to tell us about CQ early in the novel. CQ, CQ, is anybody out there who will talk to me? The identity is not revealed until the last few pages of the novel.
