The garden is also a main key to the idea of Courtly Love. In these medieval tales, the garden would be built by the lover to retreat to and think of his beloved. The irony with this is, however, that the garden here is built by Januarie- and one of the first rules of Courtly Love is that it cannot happen in marriage. It is however, used in a way entirely contrary to the Courtly Love idea when May and Damyan come together in the tree.
