: : : What is the significance of the garden in the merchants tale?
metaphor/imagery for various issues.
1. represents garden of eden. temptation (snake) represented by damyan who lures may away from januarie.
2. pear tree - again represents forbidden fruit. Also note irony in shape compared to woman's womb.
3. Idea of paradise on earth. Januarie aims for paradise in afterlife but cannot have 2 paradises. The garden is like a paradise but this is spoiled through damyan and may.
4. Garden is a metaphor for may. to januarie they are both evergreen and he tries to hold onto them both. As it turns out, Damyan breaks into them both.
See line 833 for example of Damyan's tresp
