Bertrand Russell:
If the philosophical doctrine [of Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investiga-tions] is true, philosophy is, at best, a slight help to lexicographers, and, at worst, an idle tea-table amusement. . . .
. . . we are now told that it is not the world that we are to try to understand but only sentences. . . .
There is a curious suggestion, . . . that the world of language can be
quite divorced from the world of fact. . . .
The desire to understand the world is, they think, an outdated folly. . .
