: Hi! I have to write an argumentitive paper on the texts Beowulf and Grendel, and I was wondering if any of you could throw in some suggestions that would help me out in developing a thesis. I'm thinking maybe something along the lines of Grendel as symbol for monster and by being given a name he has destroyed the entire point for humans personifying evil and fear as a monster. Since personifying evil and fear as an object it becomes less frightening and the emotions are easier to cope with, but when given a name it is given an identity; thus saying that people would want to embrace theses emotions. Tell me what you think and pick this apart please. Thanks!
You seem to be struggling for your point, or maybe meandering between a few.
It is clear that you see Grendel as a symbol of monstrous evil but I'm not quite sure of the extrapolation from there on.
Even though "evil" may be personified in the form of Grendel it is well made point of the poem that Grendel is not by nature easy to deal with, nor do people want to.
When you say "people wanting to embrace these emotions" I'm a litle fuzzing on your meaning. ?
