Generally sophists were non-Athenians who travelled around the Mediterranean, Socrates was a popular figure in Athens and well known to everyone. Although Aristophanes was not an enemy of Socrates he did identify Socrates with all the intellectual theories and scientific speculation that other sophists had looked at. Socrates was identified as a sophist unintentionally by Aristophanes and certainly Socrates resented him afterwards.
